Mission Branch Welcomes Author Daniel Alarcon on December 11!

Recently making San Francisco his home, author Daniel Alarcon will visit the Mission Branch on December 11 to read from and discuss his second novel, At Night We Walk in Circles, published in October. Alarcon received national recognition with his first book, War by Candlelight published in 2006 at the age of 29. The collection of short stories was a finalist for the 2006 PEN/Hemingway Foundation Award.

His second novel, Lost City Radio (2007) made the lists of best fiction for 2007 of the Washington Post, Booklist, The Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and The Financial Times (London). It has been translated to 10 languages. In 2010, The New Yorker named Alarcon one of the 20 promising writers under 40. His writing has appeared in McSweeney’s, n+1, The New Yorker, and Harper’s magazines.

In addition to his new novel, Alarcon will be discussing Radio Ambulante, a Spanish-language podcast radio project of Latin American stories that he co-founded in 2011.

¡Vive La France and author Cara Black!
French Night at the Mission Branch Library coming November 13

Join mystery author Cara Black and Alliance Française of San Francisco as they come to the Mission Branch Library to celebrate all things French! A Noe Valley resident, Cara Black is a San Francisco Library Laureate and a member of the Paris Sociéte Historique in the Marais. Her nationally bestselling and award nominated Aimée Leduc Investigation series set in France has been translated into French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Hebrew. She is included in the Great Women Mystery Writers by Elizabeth Lindsay 2nd edition published in the UK. Cara will be disussing her latest book Murder Below Montparnasse.
French book signing and sale hosted by Alliance Française & Borderlands Books follows the event. Refreshments will be served courtesy of Bi-Rite Market!

Learn How the Affordable Care Act Affects You!

As the enrollment period begins, please join us for an informative program with Adrian Nunez, Director of Enrollment & Community Relations at San Francisco Health Plan, to learn practical information about two key elements of the Affordable Care Act: the Medi-Cal Program and the Covered California program.
Topics will include an overview of the program, eligibility, how to enroll, and resources that can help you navigate the new health insurance marketplace. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session. Other speakers may be present and will be announced at the program.

Mariachis Coming to the Mission Branch Library!

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with
Mariachi Juvenil Los Cachorros!


This wonderful mariachi youth band was founded at St. Cornelious School in Richmond with the support of the music instructors from the school. For over 7 years, they have been serving their community, participating in religious and community events. Their commitment and dedication in music has not only formed a mariachi band, but a musical family.

Esta banda mariachi de jóvenes, fue fundada en la escuela St. Cornelious de Richmond con el apoyo de los profesores de música. Por más de 7 años han estado sirviendo a la comunidad. La dedicación de sus miembros a la música ha formado un banda mariachi, pero también una familia musical.

Coming Up in May: The Mission Branch Library 2013 Open House & Cinco de Mayo Celebration!


Continuing a long-standing tradition, the Mission Branch Library will host an afternoon of programs on Saturday, May 11 as part of its Open House and Cinco de Mayo celebration.

The programs will begin at noon, right outside the main entrance of the library (weather permitting) with a performance by Los Chiles Verdes, a rocking Mission youth band founded by local bandleaders Jose Leon and Tony Price. The band performs a variety of Latin music and is comprised of young musicians ranging from ages 8-16. This performance will be hot, so dust off your dancing zapatos and come have a good time!

At 1:30 p.m., in the Adult Reading Room, Mission High School students finalists in the Youth Speaks! 2013 Poetry Slam will read their poetry. This will be followed by a discussion of Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America with award-winning author and Editor of the Orange County Weekly Gustavo Arellano. ¡Ask a Mexican!, Arellano’s column in the OC Weekly where he answers “any and all questions about America's spiciest and largest minority” became nationally syndicated with a weekly circulation of over 2 million in 39 newspapers across the United States. The event will be followed by a book signing hosted by Modern Times Bookstore.

All programs are free and all ages are welcome so please come join us at the Mission Branch!

Book-a-Bilingual Librarian Comes to the Mission Branch Library!


Do you have questions on how to use computers and the internet, how to download eBooks to your device, or how to use the library's databases? Have a reference question that requires more time to answer? Well, help is here! Now you can schedule a one-on-one appointment for 30 minutes with a Mission Branch librarian to answer your questions.

This new library service will be offered every week on Fridays at 3:00 p.m. beginning on March 15. Please call (415) 355-5735 to book your appointment today!

Due to the anticipated demand for this service, there will be a limit of one appointment per person per month. For more information please contact Ricardo Antoni, Adult Services Librarian, at (415) 355-5738.
