Yuyi Morales at Mission Branch Library was a real treat!

We were so excited to have hosted the incredible and talented author & illustrator Yuyi Morales at several of the San Francisco Public Library branches. Her last stop was with us at Mission Branch, where we got to enjoy some mysterious treats out of the special and secret bag Yuyi takes with her on special visits. She shared with us many hand-made toys from her native country, Mexico, that were hiding in the bag.

This is her balero, a traditional cup and ball game from Mexico. Notice how big it is :) it's an extra large balero!

How lucky were we? We got a story time from the author herself! Yuyi read to us her latest book, Niño Wrestles the World! 

We learned so much about books, toys, Mexico, wresting, cucuys, and about Yuyi herself. Not only that, she let us in on a secret - she's currently working on a book about Frida Kahlo! We can't wait!

Because we are gearing up at the Mission Branch for our May 10th Open House & Cinco de Mayo celebration, we will have some wonderful Latin/Hispanic food inspired cookbooks on display by our 2nd floor Reference desk for you to check out throughout the month.

Don’t forget – the Mission branch Open House is Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. @ 300 Bartlett St. There will be a Maker May event in the Children’s Room. Also a cooking demonstration then a choral performance in the Adult Reading Room for you to enjoy.

12:00 to 2 p.m. Celebrating Maker May!

Come make a Marble Machine, build with LEGOS, and make a creation with home-made Play-doh! Marble Machine: Roll a marble down a contraption of your own design, built with everyday materials and your imagination. This program will let their inner artist and engineer come out! Sign-ups will be on day of event. Marble Machine for ages 6+, other stations open to children 3+. In partnership with San Francisco's Exploratorium.

At the Adult Reading Room:

1:00 p.m. Cooking Demonstration with Adriana Lahl of Sal de Vida Gourmet, a La Cocina Incubator Business.

Learn how to make original Mexican masa creations like quesadillas, tlacoyos, sopes, and embedded flower tortillas and join us for an explanation of why 5 de Mayo is also an American holiday. Adriana is also co-author of Celebraciones Mexicanas: History, Traditions and Recipes. Her book will be available for purchase following the demonstration.

La Cocina is a groundbreaking business incubator located in San Francisco's Mission district designed to reduce the obstacles that prevent low-income food entrepreneurs from creating successful and sustainable small businesses.

2:30 p.m. Musical Performance by Coro de la Treinta (30th Street Chorus) of the Community Music Center

This community choir for older adults is a collaboration between the San Francisco Community Music Center and the 30th St. Senior Center. The choir sings primarily in Spanish, English, and Tagalog, including many classics from Latin America.  Coro de la Treinta is directed by Martha Rodríguez-Salazar and accompanied by Jennifer Peringer.

Refreshments will be served. All the programs are free and all ages are welcomed!

Join Caitlin Chan, Project Coordinator of the California School Health Centers Association and Cynthia Leon, Adolescent Health Program Manager with the California School Health Centers Association to talk about Covered California and how to get health insurance coverage in California.

The presentation will be in English and Spanish and topics will include an overview of the program, eligibility, how to enroll, and resources that can help you navigate the new health insurance marketplace. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

Mission Branch Welcomes Author Daniel Alarcon on December 11!

Recently making San Francisco his home, author Daniel Alarcon will visit the Mission Branch on December 11 to read from and discuss his second novel, At Night We Walk in Circles, published in October. Alarcon received national recognition with his first book, War by Candlelight published in 2006 at the age of 29. The collection of short stories was a finalist for the 2006 PEN/Hemingway Foundation Award.

His second novel, Lost City Radio (2007) made the lists of best fiction for 2007 of the Washington Post, Booklist, The Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and The Financial Times (London). It has been translated to 10 languages. In 2010, The New Yorker named Alarcon one of the 20 promising writers under 40. His writing has appeared in McSweeney’s, n+1, The New Yorker, and Harper’s magazines.

In addition to his new novel, Alarcon will be discussing Radio Ambulante, a Spanish-language podcast radio project of Latin American stories that he co-founded in 2011.

A book signing hosted by Modern Times Bookstore follows the event.

French Night at the Mission Branch Library coming November 13

Join mystery author Cara Black and Alliance Française of San Francisco as they come to the Mission Branch Library to celebrate all things French! A Noe Valley resident, Cara Black is a San Francisco Library Laureate and a member of the Paris Sociéte Historique in the Marais. Her nationally bestselling and award nominated Aimée Leduc Investigation series set in France has been translated into French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Hebrew. She is included in the Great Women Mystery Writers by Elizabeth Lindsay 2nd edition published in the UK. Cara will be disussing her latest book Murder Below Montparnasse.

Mariachis Coming to the Mission Branch Library!

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with
Mariachi Juvenil Los Cachorros!

This wonderful mariachi youth band was founded at St. Cornelious School in Richmond with the support of the music instructors from the school. For over 7 years, they have been serving their community, participating in religious and community events. Their commitment and dedication in music has not only formed a mariachi band, but a musical family.

Coming Up in May: The Mission Branch Library 2013 Open House & Cinco de Mayo Celebration!

Continuing a long-standing tradition, the Mission Branch Library will host an afternoon of programs on Saturday, May 11 as part of its Open House and Cinco de Mayo celebration.

The programs will begin at noon, right outside the main entrance of the library (weather permitting) with a performance by Los Chiles Verdes, a rocking Mission youth band founded by local bandleaders Jose Leon and Tony Price. The band performs a variety of Latin music and is comprised of young musicians ranging from ages 8-16. This performance will be hot, so dust off your dancing zapatos and come have a good time!

At 1:30 p.m., in the Adult Reading Room, Mission High School students finalists in the Youth Speaks! 2013 Poetry Slam will read their poetry. This will be followed by a discussion of Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America with award-winning author and Editor of the Orange County Weekly Gustavo Arellano. ¡Ask a Mexican!, Arellano’s column in the OC Weekly where he answers “any and all questions about America's spiciest and largest minority” became nationally syndicated with a weekly circulation of over 2 million in 39 newspapers across the United States. The event will be followed by a book signing hosted by Modern Times Bookstore.

Don't miss a free jazz performance featuring Clifford Brown III & the Brewing Co.

Does the name sounds familiar? Well, Bay Area resident Clifford Brown III is the grandson of the famed jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown, one of the most influential trumpeters in the history of jazz.

Brown's emsemble, The Brewing Co., is firmly rooted in the post-bop jazz of the 50’s and 60’s with branches reaching today’s soul-jazz and nu-jazz movements. The band is currently showcasing the musical compositions of tenor saxophone sensation Dayna Stephens.

A Calavera for Carlos Fuentes

Join San Francisco Poet Laureate Alejandro Murgía and Radio Bilingüe/KPOO FM Announcer Chelis Lopez, for a Día de los Muertos tribute to legendary Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes. Fuentes died last May at the age of 83.

Along with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortázar and Mario Vargas Llosa, Fuentes is considered one of the main representatives of the Latin American Boom literary movement of the 1960s. His novel, The Death of Artemio Cruz is considered a seminal work in contemporary Spanish Literature and it earned him international recognition as Mexico’s most important novelist of the 20th century. A prolific author, Fuentes wrote novels, short stories, plays, screenplays, and numerous essays about literature, art, politics, and history. He served as Mexico’s Ambassador to France from 1975 to 1977 and won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1987 for his overall literary achievements. His works have been translated into 24 languages.

Special guests for the tribute include University of San Francisco's Director of Chicano/Latino Studies Dr. Karina Hodoyan, San Francisco State University’s Spanish Professor Dr. Gustavo Calderon and Yvette Fuentes, a close friend of the Fuentes family. A book sale hosted by Modern Times Bookstore will follow the event.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Mission Branch on Saturday, October 13!

Please join us to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Mission Branch Library with a wonderful afternoon of programs:

1: 00 p.m. Papel Picado Workshop* Conducted by Carmen Lomas Garza, visual artist, author, and teacher

This is a hands-on workshop on the techniques for cutting tissue paper to make “banderitas de papel picado” (paper banners) used in Mexico and the Southwestern United States as decorations for celebrations. The participants will learn to fold and cut tissue paper to make 3 cutout designs and then attach the cutouts to a string to make a set ready to hang at their next celebration.

*PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is for both adults and children. Children must be 6 years old and older and accompanied by an adult who will also participate. Children younger than 6 years may not attend. Adults must bring your own scissors. The library will have a limited number of scissors for adults on hand, and it will provide appropriate scissors for children.

Unravel the mystery of henna and its ancient, traditional uses, learn how to apply it, and have all your questions answered by San Francisco's Natural Henna artist Charitie Bolling. All participants will receive a free design for participating. Refreshments will be provided. Bring a friend and get entered into a raffle for a chance to win a free gift after the workshop!
