A Calavera for Carlos Fuentes

Join San Francisco Poet Laureate Alejandro Murgía and Radio Bilingüe/KPOO FM Announcer Chelis Lopez, for a Día de los Muertos tribute to legendary Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes. Fuentes died last May at the age of 83.

Along with Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortázar and Mario Vargas Llosa, Fuentes is considered one of the main representatives of the Latin American Boom literary movement of the 1960s. His novel, The Death of Artemio Cruz is considered a seminal work in contemporary Spanish Literature and it earned him international recognition as Mexico’s most important novelist of the 20th century. A prolific author, Fuentes wrote novels, short stories, plays, screenplays, and numerous essays about literature, art, politics, and history. He served as Mexico’s Ambassador to France from 1975 to 1977 and won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1987 for his overall literary achievements. His works have been translated into 24 languages.

Special guests for the tribute include University of San Francisco's Director of Chicano/Latino Studies Dr. Karina Hodoyan, San Francisco State University’s Spanish Professor Dr. Gustavo Calderon and Yvette Fuentes, a close friend of the Fuentes family.
